Benefits of capping for international students

In recent years, Canada has emerged as a leading and desirable destination for international students, including a significant influx from India, attracted by key factors such as a high-quality education system and promising post-graduation opportunities. However, this rapid increase in foreign student admissions has led to substantial challenges. One of the most pressing issues is a severe housing crisis, with demand far outstripping supply, leading to inflated rental prices and inadequate living conditions for many students. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the quality of education provided by some institutions, particularly PPP institutes, as they struggle to accommodate growing student numbers without compromising academic standards.

In response to these challenges, the Canadian government, under the leadership of Immigration Minister Marc Miller, announced a cap on foreign student visas. This measure aims to ensure sustainable growth in the international education sector while addressing housing shortages and maintaining the integrity of educational offerings. The government is also exploring additional support mechanisms and regulatory reforms to better manage the influx of international students and enhance their overall experience in Canada. This policy is expected to reduce the overall number of international students by 35% globally.

To explain and understand this thing, here are some questions and answers which will help to understand the capping system.

Why capping for international imposed?

The capping system is justified and straightforward, as the Canadian government aims to address the housing and other challenges faced by international students in recent intakes. Additionally, the government seeks to shut down certain private institutes that have exploited and misled international students by charging high fees while providing inadequate facilities, support, and lower education quality compared to other institutes. This has contributed to an unnecessary influx of international students. Now, only 364,000 international students will be permitted to enter Canada annually, with specific province-wise seats allocated.

How does capping impact Indian students?

India forms the largest group of international students in Canada. Canada is a popular destination for Indian students seeking higher education due to its quality institutions, diverse culture, and post-graduate work opportunities. While the number of Indian students may decrease under the new policy, it ensures access to legitimate and high-quality courses and institutions, leading to better education. The competition for resources such as internships, co-ops, housing, and part-time job opportunities will decrease, allowing Indian students better access to these essential supports. A more balanced and high-quality international student population will also promote cultural diversity, fostering richer cultural exchanges and a more inclusive atmosphere in the country.

Stopping Flag pooling will also be helpful in the near future

Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship announced that international students can no longer apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) at the border, effective immediately. This update from IRCC has both pros and cons. International graduates now have the opportunity to work, but they must apply for a PGWP online before their study permits expire. This new process allows them to continue working full-time while awaiting approval, with the work permit being mailed directly upon approval. This decision aims to make the PGWP process more streamlined and beneficial for international students.

Benefits of Doing Masters with New PSWP Policy

Canada is one of the most student-friendly countries in the world. Pursuing a master’s degree in Canada allows international students to expand their knowledge and develop expertise in their chosen field. Canada is a popular destination for MS programs, with approximately 807,000 students holding study permits, including 319,000 from India, according to Avanse Finance. Currently, Canada faces a skilled labour shortage and is actively hiring professionals with the right skills. This makes it an ideal place for students to launch their careers after completing their courses. Canadian universities offer outstanding research opportunities and a rich study experience. Canada is also one of the most diverse countries, welcoming students from all over the world. With a wide range of master’s programs, students can specialize in fields like Journalism, Politics, Medicine, Technology, Healthcare, Management, and more. As of February 15, 2024, the Canadian government has updated the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. Students who complete a master’s degree, even if it’s just a one-year program, will now qualify for a 3-year PGWP, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria. Additionally, priority for spousal open work permits will now be given to master’s degree students. This is a significant and positive change by Canada Immigration. Now to explain more benefits of the master’s program we will understand below points:

  • Low Cost and Quality Education: Canada offers high-quality education at an affordable cost for international students. Its education system is appealing due to its affordability compared to other countries. Additionally, with beautiful natural scenery, a safe and stable environment, and a high standard of living, Canada provides an ideal setting for a successful and fulfilling graduate life.

  • World-Class Education: Pursuing a master’s degree in Canada means receiving a world-class education. Canadian universities are renowned for their rigorous academic standards and globally recognized degrees. With significant investment in research and development, students have access to cutting-edge technology and resources, ensuring an education that is valuable for both career and personal growth.

  • PGWP Eligibility: International students graduating from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), allowing them to stay and work in Canada temporarily. Master’s degree programs, whether one or two years in length, at PGWP-eligible DLIs, qualify for a 3-year PGWP.

  • Open Work Permit for Partners and PAL Exception for Master’s: International students pursuing a master’s degree are now eligible for an exception from the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) requirement, which is necessary to verify the offer letter when applying for a student visa. Additionally, the federal government has announced that the spouses of master’s degree students will now be eligible for an open work permit. This change excludes PG diploma holders, making master’s programs in Canada even more sought after.

Starting a new journey as an international student in Canada is now easier and more beneficial. A master’s course can shape your career and offer opportunities for your spouse. The revised post-study stay-back policies provide valuable exposure. With the new policies, Canada is an even more favourable option for those with legitimate and genuine documents.
